Part time/positions are typically 3 to 6 hours/day – 10 months per year
Positions are 23 – 29.5 hours/week
SALARY RANGE: $17.66/hour to $21.45/hour in five annual steps
FILING DATE: Until Filled
THE POSITION: Under the direction of a principal, assists, tutors, and trains students in a Special Education classroom or similar learning situation; performs a variety of supportive duties for teachers and school; some positions in this class involve taking care of personal hygiene of students; and does related work as required. Some lifting of students involved in the process may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school. Demonstrated successful experience working with children in a learning situation, preferably with children with learning problems, particularly where flexibility, patience, and sensitivity are required.
THE EXAMINATION: Candidates are required to pass the Basic Skills Test for Instructional Assistants which covers English usage and proficiency, simple arithmetic through elementary algebra, reading comprehension, and the ability to assist in instruction. Candidates may also be tested on the following: the ability to deal effectively with special education students, to understand problems and solve them; to follow written and oral directions; flexibility, patience, judgment, and sensitivity. If you have at least 48 units or credit hours of college coursework you are eligible to waive the written examination by attaching unofficial transcripts or AA Degree or higher to your application. Applicants with a high school diploma or GED without 48 units or credit hours of college coursework will be required to pass a proficiency test as legislated by the State of California.
